Modulating Water Regulating Valve — Self-Powered Oil Temperature Control

The Thermal Transfer Products modulating water regulating valve automatically controls the flow of cooling water to a water-cooled heat exchanger to maintain a desired exiting oil temperature. As the oil temperature rises, the valve’s sensing bulb opens the valve to admit more cooling water; as it falls, the valve throttles back — holding a stable oil outlet temperature without wasting water. Because it’s thermally self-actuated, no external power source, air supply, or control wiring is required.

Every stock valve ships with a drilled and tapped internal bypass in the regulator body, fitted with a solid plug for 100% shut-off. A drilled orifice plug is packed with each valve for field installation when a continuous minimum water flow is required — for example, to prevent the exchanger from ever fully deadheading. This lets you configure the valve for either full shut-off or maintained minimum flow, on site, without extra parts.

The valve is ideal for water-cooled cooling circuits using TTP’s shell-and-tube (HC, HCR, B/SB, CA, EK, EC, UC/UCV) and brazed plate (BPSW, BPW) heat exchangers, where it conserves cooling water and stabilizes oil temperature. Note: these valves are not for salt water service. TTP Application Engineering can help select the correct valve and temperature setting for your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

It automatically regulates the flow of cooling water to a heat exchanger to maintain a target exiting oil temperature — opening to admit more water as oil temperature rises and throttling back as it falls.

No. The valve is thermally self-actuated by its sensing bulb, so it needs no external power source, air, or control wiring.

By admitting only as much cooling water as needed to hold the set temperature, rather than running full flow continuously — which conserves water and keeps oil temperature stable.

Every stock valve comes with a drilled-and-tapped internal bypass fitted with a solid plug for 100% shut-off. If your system needs continuous minimum water flow, a drilled orifice plug (packed with each valve) can be installed in the field instead of the solid plug.

Water-cooled heat exchangers — TTP’s shell-and-tube and brazed plate lines — in hydraulic oil and process cooling circuits.

No. These modulating valves are not rated for salt water service. For marine or sea water cooling, consult TTP Application Engineering about corrosion-appropriate options.
